Days after US President Donald Trump declared tariffs on trading partners, US tech entrepreneur Elon Musk stated on Saturday that he hoped to see full freedom of commerce between the US and Europe in the future.

Musk, a Trump advisor who has been trying to cut back on unnecessary public expenditure in the US, appeared via video connection at a meeting of the right-wing, co-ruling League Party of Italy in Florence.

“At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk stated.

Along with other EU nations, Italy, which has a significant trade surplus with the US, will be subject to a general 20% tax under Trump’s plans, which were unveiled on Wednesday.

Musk, who has frequently voiced support for right-wing parties around Europe, stated in an interview with League leader Matteo Salvini that he also wished to see more freedom of movement between the US and Europe.

“If people wish to work in Europe or wish to work in North America, they should be allowed to do so in my view,” Musk said. He added that this “has certainly been my advice to the president.”

Musk has also stated support for Salvini’s League. Musk had previously been connected to Giorgia Meloni, the right-wing prime minister of Italy, and her Brothers of Italy party.

The hard-right agendas of both parties are centered on tax cutting, law enforcement, and combating illegal immigration.

Following Trump’s tariff announcement, Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, a League member, stated earlier Saturday that the government desired “de-escalation” with the US and cautioned against enacting retaliatory tariffs.

Last month, Musk thanked Salvini after the League president suggested that Italy could choose his Starlink firm to acquire a satellite communications system.
