Asteroid 2024 YR4, which has 100 times the force of the Hiroshima bomb and might strike Earth in 2032, is being actively watched by NASA.
NASA is keeping a careful eye on an asteroid that might strike Earth. The space agency is studying 2024 YR4, a recently found space rock with a 1-in-43 risk of collision, with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Researchers are trying to improve their forecasts.
The Risk of Asteroids and Their Possible EffectsIn December 2024, NASA’s Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System detected 2024 YR4. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is comparable in height to the asteroid, which is around 180 feet (55 meters) broad. According to experts, the likelihood of a collision in December 2032 is 2.3%.
15 megatons of TNT’s worth of energy might be released if it hits. Compared to the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, this is almost 100 times more powerful. Researchers liken the possible harm to the Tunguska disaster in 1908, which destroyed millions of Siberian trees.
