Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum

In response to the United States’ “unilateral decision” to put 25% tariffs on its imports, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum imposed retaliatory duties on Tuesday.

“I want to make it clear today that we will always seek a negotiated solution as we have proposed within the framework of respect for our sovereignty,” Sheinbaum stated.

However, the United States’ unilateral choice has an impact on both domestic and international businesses that do business in our nation, as well as on our citizens. As a result, we have made the decision to implement both tariff and non-tariff measures in response,” she continued.

In addition, she charged that the United States had released “an offensive, defamatory and unsupported statement,” after the White House’s tariff announcement in which it claimed that the Mexican government had “provided safe havens for the cartels.”

Despite claiming since January that it had a detailed strategy for this precise scenario, Mexico decided to wait until Sunday to respond, in contrast to China and Canada.

Trump’s threatening tariffs on Canada and Mexico went into force on Tuesday, raising the possibility of retaliation from the US’s allies in North America.

Beijing imposed new duties of up to 15% on important US agriculture exports, such as poultry, pig, soy, and cattle, in response to US tariffs on China. The limitations on US companies were also increased. Canada also declared 25% tariffs on the US.

Following Trump’s decision to increase tariffs on Chinese imports to 20% and slap 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, all of which went into effect on Tuesday, China has imposed fresh duties that will go into force on March 10.
